The District is divided into three Wards: Bedfont, Feltham and Hanworth with a total acreage of 4,935. The estimated population is 35,260 (mid. 1944), Registrar General. This is a slight decrease compared with 1943. The day population is increased by people working at the various factories and shops. The general health of the population in this District has been good during 1944. This was very apparent in children and the number of notifiable infectious diseases were less than in 1943. 2. Diphtheria Immunisation is being carried out satisfactorily in the District and there was only one case notified. 3. The Infant death rate is coming down but tho births and deaths are slightly up. 4. Cases of Tuberculosis have not increased but the deaths from Tuberculosis are up. 5. The District is still in urgent need of more houses. D. McCarthy. Deputy Medical Officer of Health. October, 1945. 4 CHIEF SANITARY INSPECTOR'S REPORT Council Offices, Feltham, Middx. Dr. D. McCarthy, M, B., Ch. B., Deputy Medical Officer of Health, Sir, I am pleased to report that considering the shortage of labour and material a very fair amount of repair and cleansing of houses has been effected. Complaints have been dealt with as expeditiously as possible and the necessary action taken where required. Disinfection work after infectious disease has received prompt attention. Rats and Mice (Destruction) Act, 1919. This work has been prosecuted with zest. The operator's time being fully engaged in combing and treatment, with success. I find a large number of complaints received can be traced to chicken keeping, food being thrown about without due care, whilst in a few cases chickens have been found to be kept quite near the walls of dwellings, SUMMARY OF SANITARY WORK AND IMPROVEMENTS Eradication of Bed Bugs (1) The number of Council houses infected 17 The number of Council houses disinfested 17 The number of other houses infested 27 The number of other houses disinfested 27 The number of shelters and wardens posts disinfested 15 (2) The methods employed for freeing infested houses from bugs are the removal of all woodwork etc., and spraying with "Pyagra" insecticide or fumigating , with "Cimcx". In certain cases fumigation with hydrogen cyanide gas is carried out. (3) The furniture etc., of new tenants is inspected before removal to Council houses and if necessary is treated with insecticide. (4) The work of disinfestation is carried out by the local authority except when hydrogen cyanide gas is used, when a contractor is employed. Infectious Disease.
